Iconography Room

This place had been devoted to practical usage, like open shop, warehouse and office, since merchants, commercial and landlords were the main activities of ancient tenants. It was home to traditional fishing boats from mid 19th century until 20th century.

The following exhibition is displayed  Valle-Inclán: Retratos, Caricaturas y Visiones, composed by 40 graphic pieces by SIRO, Siro López, well known cartoon artist from Ferrol. This was donated, subject to preservation, permanent exhibition, access control conditions and custody according to the local heritage and museum regulations.

A unique opportunity to watch arts and artists dialogue: the literature genius with the contemporary cartoon master, around pictures from don Ramón time. These pictures capture physics, dressing and soul features belonging to Valle-Inclán individual. Don Ramón and his work inspired some of the most popular cultural icons. Hence the huge number of pictures, drawing, sculptures, engravings, etc. that remember him for his merit, not only in Literature History, but also in the current Literature and Arts.

This is the most outstanding collection of contemporary icons about «the best artist in Galicia» according to Castelao.

He certainly did not write much in our native language; but his wonderful romance is a translation or our people words from Galician to Spanish: our alien’s connoisseurs, our bitter degrees, our ruined noblemen, our drunks of new wine and old books, our pilgrim beggars, our lousy blessed ladies, our rogue abbots, our policemen and smugglers, our old soldiers and sailors, our fishermen and seamen; in a summary all that smells and is colored in Galician way».

Furniture and collected items:

Upon pedestal: main local monument models from A Pobra do Caramiñal council: Muller traballadora (2001) y Emigrante (2007), by Gonzalo Sánchez Mendizábal and original carved bust Valle-Inclán, by Fernando Castaño (2004).

Before leaving the room, some selected pictures of don Ramón from contemporary press are displayed in the adjacent room SALA DE AUDIOVISUAL. They were taken by Alfonso Sánchez Portela, Moreno or Kasado and belong to Archivo General de la Administración (Alcalá de Henares - Madrid). A nearby contemporary camera is displayed. It was made in París by H. Martín (1890-1900), de with bellows and glass plate.

In this room some movies about don Ramón life and works can be watched. On a regular basis: La Malcasada (1926), by Francisco Gómez Hidalgo, with Valle-Inclán scene at Julio Romero de Torres painter atelier, as wel as documentary Espagne. Les Morts vivants de Puebla del Caramiñal (1959), from Journal Actualité Gaumont, about ancient local «Nazareno» offering tradition. They were provided as film deposit by Filmoteca Española, Gaumont Pathé Archives and CGAI – Museo Valle-Inclán.
